Leo's Surgery & Recovery

Donation protected
One year ago we adopted Leo, a two-year old miniature poodle rescue from Mexico through Niagara Dog Rescue.  Before he arrived in Canada, he was surrendered by his previous owners to a local Mexican foster home, where he was found to be depressed, abused and traumatized. We adopted him just before the onset of the pandemic in early March and he settled into our home quickly with lots of time to bond together due to the quarantine. After a month or so we noticed he had a slight limp in his leg where he would skip a step every so often. We immediately took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with a mild form of Luxating Patella, a condition that causes his kneecap to pop out of place.

At first it was manageable and the vet suggested he would be okay for the foreseeable future, but since the beginning of March we’ve seen the condition worsen to the point of requiring immediate surgery to repair his knee. He can now no longer bear weight on his right hind leg and has been walking on three legs only for the past three weeks. Our vet also informed us that he has been coping with a number of previous injuries to that same leg; likely a combination of a severe burn and some sort of bone crushing incident inflicted from his life in Mexico. While Leo has been managing really well despite the circumstances, the only solution is surgery. The good news is that luxating patella is a condition that can be corrected; with the majority of dogs healing 100% and living long and healthy lives. While we would have normally been prepared to handle all his costs and medical expenses, this unexpected and extraordinary year has brought us more financial challenges than we can currently bear.

Leo brings so much joy to our lives! He is a one of a kind charismatic dog, full of personality and hijinks…not to mention all the love and cuddles a dog owner could ever ask for!

We want to be able to provide him with the most comfortable, functional and healthy life for years to come but this past year has been tough on us financially - like it has been for many - which has made this surgery all the more difficult to afford. We would greatly appreciate any assistance to help us cover the costs of his surgery and post-op physiotherapy needed to help him regain mobility again.

Sincerely,

Haley, Jason & Leo
