In 1998, my dad informed his kids that he had Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) & that we should get checked out because it is genetic & passes via the males in the family. I have two brothers & two sisters. We all got checked out & I was the one tohave the most advanced symptoms of getting PKD.
In 1999, I had 80% kidney function. In 2010, it progressed to 15% kidney function. My Nephrologist suggest I get a shunt to prepare for dialysis; that was 11/24/11. 6/18/2012, I had to start dialysis. I contacted Social Security, they started the process to get me on Medicare & Adult & Senior Services helped get me on Part D coverage. I talked to my primary doctor, Nephrologist & Dietician to keep me on track with medication & diet. I also inquired about getting a transplant.
First off, I am a big girl. My highest weight was 484lbs. That was an issue. My doctors stated for some surgeries I had to lose weight. With the number of diets I had tried, it was suggested I also get a Gastric Bypass
surgery as well. So I had to get down to 350lbs to have the Gastric Bypass surgery to help me get down to 237lbs for the Kidney Transplant surgery.
Besides these goals, I had others to meet to make sure I was "set" for the surgery because my immune system had to be lowered so my body would not fight so hard to attack the foreign object (the new kidney) in my body. I have to get a mamogram, annual checkup, dental check up, eye check up, ultrasound, plus some.
Some of these check ups will be covered by Medicare, but a lot will not. I will lose my Part D three months after surgery & Medicare three years after surgery, if kidney rejection process cannot be stopped [because my body will try to attack new kidney].
So my request here is to raise enough money to cover expenses I will have in the forseen future to get a Kidney Transplant.
I attached three NKF sites about transplants to see what we have to go through to get a kidney. I thank you ahead of time for your efforts to help me in this delicate time of need.
