James is a husband, brother, friend, and beloved part of his community. Just weeks ago he was full of life, spending time at the lake with Leidy and their dog Ricotta. Then, everything changed in an instant. On the morning of August 13th, life changed in an instant for James, his wife Leidy, and their family.
That day, James was in Chicago on a work trip. Early that morning, Leidy texted James from their home in Minneapolis. Hours passed with no reply, which was very unusual for him. Concerned, Leidy checked his Apple Watch and could see he was still in his hotel room. She immediately called Brandon, who was also on a work trip to Chicago, and he went to check on James—and found him unresponsive. Paramedics rushed him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a stroke.
Leidy drove straight from Minneapolis to Chicago and has been by his side ever since. Their dog, Ricotta, is with a friend in Minneapolis.
James’ Fight in the Hospital
The past weeks have been filled with ups and downs, moments of hope and moments of fear.
James was initially placed in the ICU, intubated, and heavily monitored while doctors worked to stabilize him.
- He suffered seizures, and tests revealed multiple complications, including pneumonia, pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung), and deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in the leg).
- He has undergone countless scans and procedures, with doctors adjusting medications to control blood pressure, reduce the risk of further clots, and fight off infection.
- At times, he’s been able to respond to commands—squeezing hands, moving toes, even saying his full name and recognizing Leidy as his wife. When a doctor asked him who Leidy was, he replied, “My wife, my joy.” Those small victories have brought enormous joy and hope.
- Other days have been much harder. James has had to be re-intubated, has struggled with infections, and continues to face challenges with speaking and regaining strength.
Doctors have emphasized that recovery from a stroke is a long journey, especially in these critical first months. Intensive therapies, close monitoring, and ongoing care will be required to give James the best chance of healing.

While James is in the hospital, Leidy has taken a leave of absence from work to be with him. They have insurance through their work at Amazon, but it does not cover all expenses—and the financial strain is significant.

- Otros días han sido mucho más difíciles. James ha tenido que ser reintubado, ha luchado contra infecciones y continúa enfrentando desafíos para hablar y recuperar fuerzas.
