***Please help us to raise £71,200 to fund our Mum’s cancer treatment! We will be participating in challenges and events throughout 2019 to help raise money and hope you can read our full story below***

Bev Silver - Daughter, Sister, Mum of 4, Nanna of 8 (and 1 on the way), Partner and Friend and all round amazing person!

We are hoping to be able to raise money to fund our Mum’s cancer treatment that she is urgently in need of. She has Neuroendocrine Tumours and has had them for over 9 years now. Initially she had a liver resection, but the cancer then spread to her bones and grew back in her liver and is now incurable.

About 4 years ago Mum started on a new treatment called LU177 (Lutetium therapy) – This new treatment is given every 8 – 12 weeks, 4 times within a year and is known to destroy cancerous cells, at the time it was a new drug and was funded due to it being in the early stages of its development. With Mum, this treatment led to her tumours having a slight reduction, but best of all, she was stable for 3 years which has been amazing. We had always been told that another course of treatment would be available.

Mum was then told in July 2018 that her tumours had increased and were getting bigger again and she was asked to have some scans to ensure that the tumours would take up the lutetium solution which forms part of the LU177 treatment she received previously. At the time she was informed that Addenbrookes Hosptial had spoken to the manufacturing company regarding the funding of the treatment she received in 2014 and that it had all been agreed. Her tumours did take up the solution so we thought all was well and looking hopeful for treatment to commence as soon as possible.

Mum was then called into clinic early September 2018 to be told that unfortunately funding had been withdrawn for her treatment and that the person who agreed this should not have done so which was of course heart breaking to hear when we all had been hopeful. The total cost to self-fund this treatment is £71,200, which we are now looking to raise in order to support our mum. They have stated the reason for this not being available is due to the fact that not enough research and data is available to say whether the treatment can be as successful a second time around for a patient, they do not then know how effective it is. However, we know the impact it had on our Mum’s health and life the first time and we want to be able to give this to her again.

Addenbrookes Hospital are only offering Mum Oral chemo at the moment which hopefully may stabilise her tumours. Since being told the treatment isn’t available without funding, she has had targeted radiotherapy on the new tumour on the spine, which has caused her extreme pain, and she started taking the oral chemo tablets in October 2018. These tablets are the only thing that are keeping her going in replacement of the LU177 treatment which is of course preferable. The side effects of these tablets are having a big impact on the quality of her life now which is hard to see.

We want to let you all know that Mum is not giving up and we are all so proud of her determination and cheerfulness through all of this, she is still currently working and keeping to her usual routine even though she is feeling extremely unwell a lot of the time.

We hope you are able to help us to raise the £71,200 we need to fund our Mum’s treatment and we are extremely grateful for anything you can donate.
