Dwight and Patti left Jan 1, 2017 for a three month missions trip to Jamaica. They have been doing these long term trips for about 5 years now. But they have been going to Jamaica for about 25 years investing in several areas for the Kingdom of God. Before leaving this time around, Dwight hadn't been feeling 100% and did some blood work and found that his platelets were low but that he should be able to travel. They set up a string of tests to do when they returned in March. One week into the trip dad began feeling worse. While at one of the work sites he had fallen while walking backwards and bruised himself up pretty good. One week later he returned to the college where they stay and ended up going to the local hospital for some blood and other tests. While waiting for those results, Dwight ended up being admitted to the Hospital in Mandeville where we eventually learned that he was in kidney failure and they also suspected Multiple Myeloma.
Their son Chris made an emergency trip to Jamaica that same day to bring Dwight and Patti home for care in the states. Thirty-one hours later they landed in Fort Wayne and Dwight was taken directly to the hospital where he was admitted to the Oncology wing.
Since then, there have been many blood tests, transfusions, X-rays, antibiotics, IV's, MRI and ultrasounds and dialysis procedures done. It was confirmed once again that dad has stage 3 Multiple Myeloma and was in double kidney failure, as well as having an infection in his blood.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. It causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, where they crowd out healthy blood cells. Rather than produce helpful antibodies, the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause kidney problems.
Dwight is currently showing improved kidney function and has begun chemo treatments to fight the myeloma. We continue to pray that God will have mercy on him and give he and mom the strength needed to walk this long road. God has a plan through all of this, we trust that He has Dwights' best interest at heart and that through it all God will be glorified.
We currently do not know when Dwight will be discharged or what life looks like after the hospital, but we trust that God will continue to provide.
As you can imagine the medical bills associated with such treatment will be significant and very taxing with a fixed income. As hard as it is to ask, If you are willing and able to help ease the burden through your generosity, it would be greatly appreciated and certainly not forgotten.
Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
