It is with a heavy heart and supreme sadness that I must report the death of Kris Neuschaefer. We, at Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, are in complete shock at hearing of the loss of one of our own. Kris was a one of a kind person, friend, and brother in lifesaving.
Those of us that have been on the patrol the longest had watched him grow up at th...e pool and in the ocean at Fort Lauderdale beach. First at swim meets at the Hall of Fame Pool, then in ocean mile swims, later in college at the University of Hawaii and Broward College as one of their top sprinters, as a pool lifeguard at the FLA Complex, and finally as an Ocean Lifeguard EMT and Competition Team member for FLOR, we witnessed this great waterman develop into a awesome lifesaver.
In Kris’s career, he has saved hundreds of lives, and mentored and taught thousands of kids. He taught swim lessons in high school and college, and later became the coordinator for the Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue Junior Lifeguard Program. He had been FLOR’s “Lifeguard of the Year,” and been nominated three times for Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association's award of the same name. He had been “Employee of the Month” for Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue, Event Coordinator for the 2009 USLA National Lifeguard Championships, President of the USLA Fort Lauderdale Chapter, and was an executive board member of the United States Lifesaving Association Southeast Region as their Secretary.
More importantly than any of his accomplishments, degrees, or awards, Kris was a great person with a love for life, a zest for adventure, and a person that made any room he walked into more fun. Kris was great brother, doting son, and proud father. A lifelong Fort Lauderdale resident that was proud to be a local. There will never be another person like Kris Neuschaefer, not even close, and the void his passing creates can't possibly be filled. But, luckily for all of us that knew him, he created a vast catalog of hilarious memories, and legions of people that were positively impacted by his legacy. Rest in peace, Neusch… you will never be forgotten.
In Kris Neuschaefer's honor, and at the suggestion of his beloved Kristina, we are creating a scholarship fund to help economically disadvantaged families afford to send their kids to Junior Lifeguard Programs in their area. Kris loved teaching kids how to swim, and he loved sharing his passion for the ocean and the beach. Hopefully, with your collective support, we can make this a reality. Thank you in advance for your help.
