Hi, I’m Rayon Brown. I was born and raised in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, and I was there on October 28, 2025, with my family, when hurricane Melissa made landfall.

We are grateful to be alive; but the Jamaica I knew no longer exists.

Homes, schools, churches, and groceries stores were severely damaged/destroyed. Three weeks later, most of the communities in Jamaica where the hurricane made landfall still have no electricity, no water, and are running low on food and other basic necessities. Some still have no cellphone service and are cut off from loved ones and unable to call for help.

For three days after the hurricane, we didn’t know if our family members were alive, and they didn’t know about us either. That kind of fear changes you forever.

While walking from Burnt Savannah to Santa Cruz, I met incredible people who gave me rides and hope. Their kindness reminded me what Jamaica is all about, love, resilience, and community. These are traits I have always implemented in my work here in Appleton. Now that I’m back home in Appleton, Wisconsin, my heart is still in Jamaica. I can’t rest knowing that I have family, friends and neighbors suffering.

I’m asking for your help to raise money to support relief and rebuilding efforts in my community.
