Deb Wagner has Cerebral Palsy and can live independently because of her service dog, Scarlet, that helps her get dressed, pick up dropped items and much more. Deb has been a trendsetter of sorts from early on in her life. In the late 1970’s, she was on her safety patrol for her parochial grade school, she was on her high school track team throwing shotput and discus from her manual wheelchair. By the 1990’s, she was honored with the title of Ms. Wheelchair Indiana and voted “the women most likely to succeed on the national level despite her disability.” Deb was born prematurely and consequently lives daily with the struggles of Cerebral Palsy.

The team of Deb & Scarlet has done amazingly well together. Scarlet at the age of 2, knew just over 25 commands to assist Deb with daily needs. Many of these 25 commands were taught to Scarlet through a highly supervised prisoner program at a medium to high security prison. Deb has taught her an additional 50. Scarlet has handed Deb the phone in an emergency just like two members of a track team exchange the baton in a relay. On another occasion, Scarlet was able to tug Deb’s feet free of the wheelchair when equipment malfunctioned and trapped Deb’s feet under her electric wheelchair.

Deb is such generous person and likewise has been very public oriented with Scarlet. The team of Deb & Scarlet is always educating others about service dogs when they are public. Nursing home residents who have not uttered a word in years begin to relive their childhood memories while stroking Scarlet, who is now volunteering as a certified therapy dog. Grade school students learn that even through Scarlet is damaged with a scar on her head from being attached to her mother’s placenta; she has a purpose and a job to do. Business people learn through team building exercises with Scarlet that good communication involves using the right words plus the right timing to yield the desired results.

Scarlet is 10 years old and in need of retirement. Deb wants to raise funds needed for food, hotel, and travel costs during the two weeks of training with Scarlet’s successor. A percentage of the proceeds earned above the goal will be returned to the service dog agency for the care and training of future service dogs. All proceeds will be returned to Deb to disperse as she deems appropriate.

"I will become that well-trained pet until my final breath when my forever partner and master will whisper in my ear one last time, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.'" --Scarlet upon retirement
