Autumn's Medical Fund

Autumn is a 5 year old spaniel mix. She is a friendly and extremely sweet natured dog. She is mostly white and with a couple of large brown spots. Even though she is 5, she has a puppy-like demeanor filed with boundless kisses and tail wags.

As adorable as she is, she has had a rough life. Unfortunately, Autumn has been living in a backyard with minimal shelter for about 3-4 years. This includes the hot temperatures during the summer and cold temperatures during the winters in CA. She has had little human contact and a lack of medical attention. She had also been fed human scraps which has caused her to be overweight. Back in June, I noticed her and realized she had something growing in her ears. I convinced the owners to get her checked up at the Vet. It turned out that her ear canals were completely calcified due to chronic ear infection that went unseen.

The owners and I came to an agreement that I would foster her after seeking medical help. Autumn received the TECA surgery on 10/15. Her ear canals and ear drums were removed from both ears, and she became deaf. I brought her back to my home in San Diego on 10/16. I had hoped to foster her and help her transition with recovery and hearing loss.

She needed 2 weeks to recover before removing her sutures. Everything seemed to go as planned until it didn't. The day after I brought her home, part of her earlobe was not receiving blood flow and it was evident that the tissue was dying. After lengthy conversations with the veterinary surgeon, we agreed to let the ears go through it's natural progression in order to give the healthy skin some time to heal and grow. This meant extreme pain for Autumn, pus removal 2-3 times a day, and 10+ pills everyday. According to the vet, Autumn would be incredibly uncomfortable with the extremely painful inner ear ablation and necrotic ear lobe. However, it was really hard to tell Autumns discomfort. If anything she seemed happier than ever! She would follow me everywhere I went and wanted to sit next to me constantly. She wagged her tail always and played happily with my dogs as much as she was physically able.

During these two weeks I learned that Autumn is resilient, tenacious, and smart. She was quick to learn and adjusted to her surroundings remarkably. She even responded to calls though, in theory, she has no hearing. She learned to read the room and feel the environment. I have never seen a dog more eager to live.

Autumn's sutures were removed 10/29 and her earlobe was repaired. When she awoke for the anesthesia she seemed fine. However, after a couple hours after arriving home, we noticed that she became increasingly lethargic. We rushed her to a vet, where her glucose level was measured. The vet found that Autumn's blood sugar was 6x the healthy amount. The vet also found a urinary tract infection and ketones in her urine. We were told that Autumn had a life-threatening diagnosis of diabetic ketoacedosis, and she would die if nothing was done. With a relatively good prognosis, we rushed her to the ER last night.

This is what the money will be used for. Autumn's bill for the ER was quoted to be around $5000. This is an incredible amount for our family right now. I am making $7000 our goal because she will be needing regular insulin injections and office visits for the rest of her life.

We know Autumn wants to live. She's been fighting this uphill battle alone, for so long. I don't want to take away her chance because of financial reasons. So that is why I'm crowd funding, to give Autumn a chance at the life she eagerly wants and deserves. Please help! Any amount is appreciated. Thank you for listening and please share.
