Written by a Friend Who Cares
I'm writing this on behalf of my dear friend JA (name withheld for anonymity) who needs our help during one of the most vulnerable moments of her life.
JA is 9 months pregnant and currently staying at a women's shelter in Brooklyn after making the incredibly difficult decision to leave an unsafe living situation. She had to walk away from her baby's father due to his escalating behavior, leaving behind nearly everything she owned to protect herself and her unborn child.
She made the choice only a mother could make. She left to protect her baby.
Her entire family lives in South Asia. She's been alone in the USA for 15 years, building her life from scratch with no family support system nearby. Right now, she's facing an impossible situation: visibly pregnant, laid off and unable to secure another position since December 2024, attending physical therapy for symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), and struggling to meet her most basic needs while preparing to bring a new life into the world, completely alone.
Her Story:
JA is one of the most qualified, hardworking people I know. She spent all of 2025 searching for work after being laid off, and for the first time in her career, she's been unable to find employment.
She's not looking for a handout, she's looking for a hand up. She wants nothing more than to get back on her feet, but right now, she needs to focus on having a healthy baby and giving herself the recommended 6 weeks of recovery before jumping back into the job hunt.
She's doing all of this with zero family support nearby, zero financial help from her baby's father.
What She Needs Help With:
The funds raised will cover absolute necessities for the next 3-6 months:
Moving & Storage Costs:
- Hiring a truck to retrieve her clothes and belongings from her ex's city in the Northeast and storing them safely (~$700-$1000)
- Basic Monthly Bills: Phone bill, essential credit card payments to avoid destroying her credit ($450/month)
- Baby Essentials: Diapers and formula (~$200-300/month)
- NYC Transportation: Getting to medical appointments to and from the shelter, and eventually job interviews ($150/month)
- Emergency Buffer: Unexpected expenses that come with having a newborn (~$500)
Total Goal: $6,000-$8,000 to cover 3-6 months of bare minimum survival.
Why I'm Asking for Your Help:
JA has always been the person who helps others. She came to this country 15 years ago and built a life through sheer determination, and she did. She's resilient, capable, and fiercely independent. Being laid off in December 2024 threw her life into a curveball, while she managed to live off her savings for months, eventually funds dried out to the sheer expense of living in NYC.
My friend is carrying a baby, managing painful pregnancy complications that require ongoing treatment, living in a shelter, and trying to rebuild her entire life from scratch, all while dealing with the trauma of leaving an unsafe relationship. And she's doing it completely alone, thousands of miles from her family.
She didn't ask me to write this. In fact, she's probably going to be uncomfortable that I did. But I know her, and I know she won't stop fighting. She just needs a little breathing room to bring her baby safely into the world and recover before she gets back to work.
Every single dollar will go directly toward keeping her and her baby safe, fed, and stable during these critical months.
What Happens Next:
With your support, JA can:
✅ Safely retrieve her belongings and store them until she secures stable housing
✅ Continue her necessary physical therapy to manage pregnancy complications
✅ Focus on her health and her baby's health without the constant panic of unpaid bills
✅ Have the essentials ready for her newborn, diapers and formula.
✅ Take the medically recommended 6 weeks to recover from childbirth
✅ Return to the workforce strong, healthy, and ready to rebuild her life.
This isn't her forever situation, this is just what she needs to survive the next few months. She's already planning her comeback. She just needs us to help her get there.
She's built a life alone before. She made the hardest choice a mother can make. She'll rebuild again. She just needs a village to help her through this moment
