On the weekend of 19-20 October, Andrew Hamilton suffered a stroke. The first warning signs were a change in his speech and walk. He initially went to an emergency clinic near the Alfred Hospital and they directed him to emergency at the Alfred which is when his hospital stay started.
Andrew had a loss of clear speech, was has thankfully come back. He also lost use of his right arm and leg. With physio and occupational therapy he has regained the ability to walk and use his R arm/leg but this is partial at this stage.
Andrew is planned for discharge on December 11th and the hope is to keep his improvement going after discharge so he can have a full recovery.
Hyperbaric oxygen has been studied for post-stroke patients with encourage results. See this recent study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7081098/
This study indicated 40 to 60 x 90 min sessions is a good start and Dr Hooper from OxyMed in South Yarra strongly recommends aiming for 100 hours in total. The cost is $300 per 90 min session. If done 5x weekly, the 100 hours could be done over around 13 weeks.
