Katelyn has had quite the journey, during which our friends and family have been so loving, kind, and generous.
Donated funds are deposited into a dedicated account managed by her grandpa, Randy Hiatt. This is why you see his name on this campaign.
Katelyn recieved two very special Valentine's Day gifts from her dad in 2012 - his left kidney and a second chance at life! Sadly, almost seven years later, the kidney is in rejection.
Rejection started in November when her routine labs showed concerns. A biopsy of the kidney confirmed rejection. Despite undergoing a course of treatment, the kidney sustained irreversible damage and is in chronic rejection.
A second type of rejection started in late December, an active rejection for which she endured another course of treatment. The goal was to fight the active rejection to postpone complete failure.
To say Katelyn's case is complicated would be an understatement. The anti-rejection medication triggered another serious issue. After three rounds of treatment for active rejection, Katelyn's blood count and platelets dropped. Even after transfusions of both, her body is not sustaining healthy counts.
Katelyn has a condition that destroys red blood cells and platelets called Thrombotic Microangiopathy (TMA). This condition was indicative of a serious blood disorder.
She was diagnosed with Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS), which is classified as an "ultra rare" disease.
In February she was hospitalized with pulmonary aveolar hemorrhage, caused by inflammation in the capillaries of her lungs.
Anti-rejection efforts were abandoned in April as kidney function was not improving. Katelyn endures four-hour hemodialysis treatments 3 times a week, and bimonthly infusions of a specialty drug to control the aHUS.
A second transplant is a possibility once her health issues are under control and when various specialists agree that the time is right. In the meantime, Katelyn stays positive and is takes good care of herself. She has not felt well enough to go back to work.
Much love and many thanks to our dear friends and family.
