My name is Dustin. I have severe CPTSD and depression. I am originally from Milwaukee and I lived in Upper Michigan for the last 7 years. During the time in the UP, I was isolated and developed suicidal thoughts. I tried to get help from the local mental health center but was denied 4 times over technicalities. The reasons were my caseworker quit, I went to another hospital for urgent care, and 2 times because months went by and I fled care because my PTSD controlled my thoughts. After years of trying to get help, struggling from job to job, feeling worthless, and begging for assistance, I gave away everything to my neighbors and used my security deposit to get to NYC. I went to NYC because I could get free impatient care and aftercare. In NYC, I was admitted to the hospital for 12 days and set up with meds and a therapist. I felt better about the situation but I couldn't handle the shelter because I have hyper-vigilance. When I sense any danger, my adrenaline spikes and I either go into fight or flight mode. I asked to be transferred to a mental health shelter and I was denied. I lived out of a storage locker for a short time and tried to earn money any way possible but it didn't work. I spent some time walking from one side of Manhattan to the other looking for a solution so I could continue therapy but I just went in circles and ended up on the street in the cold. I spent the last of my money on an Amtrak ticket back to Milwaukee. I filed a disability claim but I won't receive any money for at least 6 months and possibly up to 2 years. I don't like asking for help. It hurts my pride. I'm going to have to start from nothing though in Milwaukee. I also have to pay for insurance to get therapy and for meds.
