Olympic Gymnasts. Damaged Equipment. Preparation for Olympics in Tokyo 2020 in jeopardy. Your assistance much needed and appreciated. Many of you watched soccer FIFA World Cup this past summer. Many of you cheered for Croatia all the way till the end in the finals. I received messages from all over the world from many of my friends congratulating me. I thank you for that. I was proud that finally all my friends knew where I come from. I always believed that sports represents this undeniable connection for all people in the world, no matter where they come from. I was an athlete myself and my first sport was gymnastics. Later, as I became pole vaulter and got awarded college scholarship in the United States, I left behind my family, my coaches and my fellow gymnasts at the gymnastics club that continued to produce many of the best Croatian gymnasts. I was watching and was always part of that community with my heart and soul. Soon my clubmate and my best girlfriend reached Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. Four years later, she reached another Olympic competition in London 2012. My club and I couldn't be more proud of this success. Several years after, another little girl, who watched us and learned from us, became Olympian herself and competed in Rio 2016. This was now 3rd time that my club Marjan, from Split, Croatia reached the highest level of competition in sports, Olympic Games. We have many talented girls and boys now that dream the same dream and work hard every single day to reach success. Now, many of you will understand that this is not soccer. This is gymnastics. Although one of the toughest, one of the most difficult sports, it still has never reached popularity like soccer, football, baseball, basketball, etc., not to mention it never gets the attention and financial assistance that it needs and deserves, especially in small country like Croatia. Gymnastics is one of the most fundamental sports; teaches young kids agility, flexibility, basic fitness and general discipline, which many of these popular soccer players practiced when they were little boys and girls. Living in the USA, I was able to visit enormous gymnastics facilities worth millions of dollars, still many of those organizations are unable to measure to the success of our little and limited gym. They rather focus on massive numbers of kids with mainly business goals in mind. Our club has always been about family, love for the sport and reaching highest standards in this sport, and although we managed to produce Olympic gymasts in 20 yrs of our existance, despite the lack of funding, while practicing in conditions and using facilities that do not meet the standards not even of a basic gymnastics gym... we have just recently faced the highest challenge of all!! Recent heavy rain in the city of Split has caused heavy damage to the building itself and the gym flooded, causing large damage to the mattresses, jumping pit, floor apparatus, beam, uneven bars, vault... Many items in the gym got soaked and are now creating dangerous conditions for the kids, especially creating inadequate training facility for Ana Đerek and Korina Brnada,who are now serious candidates for the upcoming Olympics in Tokio 2020. Damage is unmeasurable and in order for our little girls and boys to continue working for their Olympic dreams, we need to repair the roof first, and then repair and invest in new equipment, primarily floor. We are left to deal with all this on our own, very difficult to obtain funding from the City and the country of Croatia. Again, sports of gymnastics is left on the margins, while 300 of our kids get exposed to dangerous training conditions which can cause even further damage. This is why I am creating this GoFundMe campaign, I truly want to help and truly believe that I have many friends, collegues, fellow athletes, coaches, bosses, professors, business owners, people all over the world who know me and my family and know we will not take this help for granted, but to create more successful athletes, Olympians. Maybe exactly these young athletes, gymnasts, one day become Jordan(s), Ronaldo(s), Mia Hamm(s), Lindsay Von(s), FloJo(s), Simone Biles(es).. Thank you for your help in advance!!
