More Information about Denish
Denish Akuom received a scholarship from the East Africa Development Bank in partnership with Africa America Institute (EADB-AAI) to pursue his Masters degree in mathematics education at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education in New Jersey, USA. These scholarships aim to promote STEM education in Africa and are offered to experienced African educators in the STEM fields. Denish completed his undergraduate degree in 2013 at Karatina University, Kenya where he majored in mathematics and geography. After graduating he joined Windle Trust Kenya based in the Dadaab Refugee camps, where he served as a teacher. He later joined Light Academy, Kenya where he served as a teacher before coming to Rutgers University for his masters. In addition, he is the co-founder of Eden View Academy, Oyugis.
Based on this rich experience and his studies at Rutgers he has the following aspirations for the approaches to teaching and learning at Edenview Academy.
"1. Learning should be more student-centered, self-paced, promoting self-discoveries and critical thinking. As a matter of fact, our lessons at Rutgers are very engaging, thought-provoking, self-paced and student-centered. I realize that all these are possible when the learning environment is conducive and teachers are trained and equipped with these skills. These are therefore some of the key changes I am planning to implement in this school. On this note, we are planning to improve our school (classrooms, computer lab among other things) and also have a two week training session (in August 2018) for our teachers. We also plan to have weekly departmental sessions to help discuss progress and any challenges experienced. We will expect our learners to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers.
2. In addition, to keep up with 21st century learning there is a need to incorporate technology into our lessons. With your support, we plan find a way to develop innovative approaches to connecting our school to the internet and gaining access to educational technology that is most practical for enhancing the student learning in all of their classes."
