Edenview Academy in Kenya

Donation protected
Make a difference today by donating to Eden View Academy, a small village school in Kenya started by Denish Akuom and his brother.  Denish is a Kenyan student at the  Rutgers Graduate School of Education who has nearly completed his Masters degree in Mathematics Education. Eden View Academy is located about 4 km from Oyugis town in Kanyango Sub-Location in Kenya. This village school was started in 2009 to help provide affordable and accessible education to children who were previously walking over 2 miles to reach the nearest public school. The aim of opening this school was to make education more accessible to all, particularly the younger children who could not walk the long distance to school every day. In addition, the school has had a particular focus on providing education to orphans and those in single-parent households who are able to attend Eden View Academy for free. And true to their vision, since the opening of this school, they have seen a steady increase in enrollment, an indication that there was a strong need for a school in this village. The current student population of Eden View Academy is 150.

With your support, the following are their funding priorities:
1.     Construct 9 modern classrooms equipped with blackboards, whiteboards and furniture
2.     Construct an office equipped with office furniture, and 2 computers for carrying out administrative duties.
3.     Build a school library equipped with books and other materials where students can carry out research and exploration.
4.     Establish a computer laboratory where students will be taking computer lessons to help them gain access to 21st century learning.
5.     Increase the number of teachers, to ease the workload and allow for more efficient quality teaching.

With your support, you will help them provide a quality education in an environment that is more suitable for learning.
Please donate now to support these children in order to better their lives and the lives of their families.

More Information about Denish
Denish Akuom received a scholarship from the East Africa Development Bank in partnership with Africa America Institute (EADB-AAI) to pursue his Masters degree in mathematics education at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education in New Jersey, USA. These scholarships aim to promote STEM education in Africa and are offered to experienced African educators in the STEM fields.  Denish completed his undergraduate degree in 2013 at Karatina University, Kenya where he majored in mathematics and geography. After graduating he joined Windle Trust Kenya based in the Dadaab Refugee camps, where he served as a teacher. He later joined Light Academy, Kenya where he served as a teacher before coming to Rutgers University for his masters. In addition, he is the co-founder of Eden View Academy, Oyugis.

Based on this rich experience and his studies at Rutgers he has the following aspirations for the approaches to teaching and learning at Edenview Academy.

"1. Learning should be more student-centered, self-paced, promoting self-discoveries and critical thinking. As a matter of fact, our lessons at Rutgers are very engaging, thought-provoking, self-paced and student-centered. I realize that all these are possible when the learning environment is conducive and teachers are trained and equipped with these skills. These are therefore some of the key changes I am planning to implement in this school. On this note, we are planning to improve our school (classrooms, computer lab among other things) and also have a two week training session (in August 2018) for our teachers. We also plan to have weekly departmental sessions to help discuss progress and any challenges experienced. We will expect our learners to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers.

2. In addition, to keep up with 21st century learning there is a need to incorporate technology into our lessons. With your support, we plan find a way to develop innovative approaches to connecting our school to the internet and gaining access to educational technology that is most practical for enhancing the student learning in all of their classes."
