On August 31, 2021 at the age of 42, Elizabeth, my sister, was diagnosed with colon cancer. That October she had colon resection surgery, removing the tumour area. It was also discovered that 9/16 lymph nodes harvested contained cancer cells. She was diagnosed with stage 3C colon cancer and eventually started 12 rounds of chemotherapy.
In August once the chemo was complete, Elizabeth was given a clean bill of health. She rang the Bell of Hope and began putting cancer behind her.
Unfortunately, that would be short lived. In December after a follow up scan, it was determined that cancer had spread to the left lung and the omenteum lining. Cancer had returned as aggressive stage 4.
The plan of attack was to have a lung wedge removal surgery to remove the tumor. Chemo started again. The goal was to qualify for life saving surgery in Halifax called HIPEC. Elizabeth eventually had the tumor removed from her lung and found out that she was a candidate for Halifax.
Sadly, this fall cancer spread into both ovaries and back into both lungs. This was the worse case scenario. This spread would mean that the life saving surgery in Halifax was no longer an option.
As you can imagine, this has devastated our family. We want Elizabeth and Harold to be able to concentrate their energy on being a family and spending time together with their two small children Laurie and Grace. Sadly, as her prognosis is now terminal, Harold has taken a leave from his job to be home, unfortunately this means no income as Elizabeth is no longer working as well. We are hoping that any funds raised will go towards the living expenses that they are incurring and will help in the future.
Elizabeth is a truly wonderful person, mother, sister, wife and friend who would and has done so much for so many people, especially those in our community. Please consider donating, no amount is too small. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing.
All donations received from this fundraiser will be given to Elizabeth Laurie and Harold Furlong to help alleviate their financial burden. Thank you again.
