Dwight the Dog Cancer Treatment

Donation protected
Dwight K. Schrute is a very good boy. The best, in fact. So when I recently found out that he has leukemia, and a mass on his spleen, I was devastated. The good news is, they can remove his spleen and treat the leukemia. The bad news? All together, treatment costs are about $10,000.

I've already thrown my meager savings into the tests and meds that led to the diagnosis, and I couldn't even have afforded that without the help and generosity of my friends on Twitter. And I've struggled with the knowledge that this is just so so much money, and there are so many good causes you could donate to. But this dog has gotten me through some really hard times, and if there's any chance I can get him through this, I have to take it.

If all goes well with the surgery, and the biopsies and tests that follow, Dwight could easily have another 3-4 happy years demanding treats and pets and rolling around in the snow and bringing joy. I certainly could use it.

I've also applied for a treatment grant of up to $1,500 from the charity Live Like Roo; any extra funds from this GoFundMe will go straight to them (whether or not they award us a grant). They provide fast cash grants for cancer treatment for pets - it's a beautiful charity, and I hope you'll consider donating to them in the future. Live Like Roo Foundation

So, if you have some dollars to spare for Dwight, I can't thank you enough. I'll keep you posted on hist treatment updates - he's got a great oncologist and surgeon lined up, we're simply waiting until we have the funds.

The Story of Dwight the Dog

In January of 2008, my mom went to pick up a pair of shoes at a little family-owned shoe store in my hometown of Richland, WA. When she walked in, she found the owner trying to warm up a little puppy he'd just found, shivering and hungry in the alley. He wasn't sure what to do with a dog; and since the Humane Society was closed for a holiday weekend, he didn't know where to take him. So, of course, my mom volunteered to take him in for the weekend. And as anyone who's ever temporarily taken in a puppy could guess...he never made it to the shelter. Instead, I took him to the vet, got medicine for his worms, got him his shots, and gave him a name: Dwight K. Schrute, after the character from The Office.

Dwight has always been a very good boy, but also a lot of work. He's smart, and playful, and loves nothing more than to be the center of attention. The vet told us "don't worry, he'll calm down in about seven years." I said, "It'll be a miracle if either of us survive three."

There was the time he chewed up a bottle of Tylenol; the time he ate all stocking stuffers, foil wrappers included; the time he ate a rib bone whole; the time he ate the entire Easter ham (are you sensing a theme). My favorite, in retrospect, was when we lived in South Carolina. He used to think it was funny to bolt if someone left a door open. He loved nothing more than being chased. But we'd just moved to a new place, near a really busy street - when some friends came to visit, and held the door open a moment too long, he took off, and I felt my heart stop. We all took off after him, four twenty-somethings, sprinting down the street screaming DWIGHT at the top of our lungs. I didn't know the neighborhood well yet, so it was a complete surprise when we found ourselves...in the middle of an outdoor wedding.

No, really.

Eventually, I thought Dwight might like a friend. And that's how we ended up with Mose.

If you asked Dwight, he'd probably have some unflattering things to say about this little mess of a dog. But he puts up with him, and lets him steal all the bones and doesn't even complain too much when Mose gets scared and curls up right next to him. Through it all, they're brothers and best friends and partners in crime.

Thanks for helping our little family. It means the world.
