Welcome to the story of a Young Black Woman Becoming more than even She Dreamed. I was accepted into the CPS Special Education Residency Program at Roosevelt University. I was accepted into the residency program due to recommendations from staff at the school where I am a Teaching Assistant. My ACT scores and recommendation from Professors also helped. However, I can not proceed with the admission process until I have settled my account with National Louis and send my official transcripts over. While I know I will have other expenses, I will tackle them once I receive confirmation that I can register for classes.

Please understand that I have tried to figure out a way to pay the balance due to National Louis University. As a single mother of three children, I barely make enough to cover all my daily expenses. Adding to that, my oldest daughter is battling End Stage Kidney Failure. She was diagnosed August 9, 2015, and it has been thousands of pills, hundreds of days in the hospital, 9 surgeries, and 1 kidney transplanted from me; just to have a little bit of normalcy. Though she will never have a ‘normal’ she will be taking immunosuppressants all her life, and need another transplant.  The last four years of being hit with medical expenses doesn’t allow me to save much money. When I did have extra money, I was using it to fund my classroom store or purchase classroom materials for my students.

I didn’t just decide I wanted to be a certified educator. I was a Preschool teacher for 4 years and an associate degree would suffice for that role. Through my role as a Teaching Assistant with CPS, I have seen the need for passionate instructors in front of the students. During the months where I have led instruction with my Middle Schoolers, I have seen how my style of teaching resonates with them. I take the time to build relationships with students. I encourage them to be thinkers, ask questions, tutor their peers, and be advocates for themselves. Future Leaders need Current Role Models! Is my Motto.

So I mentor them and share my story, so they can draw on my experiences and make more informed choices. My story of having two children before graduating highschool. Then, obtaining my associates degree while raising three children. It inspires them and encourages them to never give up and to always chase their dreams. I want to continue my story by showing the students that it’s never too late to achieve your goals, to graduate college, to walk in your Purpose. I will be able to do this and so much more with your support.
