On Saturday September 20th my granddaughter was viciously attacked by her neighbor’s dog as she and her friend were playing. This unprovoked attack resulted in a broken thumb, severed tendons in her thumb and fingers, multiple deep tears of the hand, and puncture wounds throughout her palm and up her forearm.

Willow is a 12 year old 7th grader full of energy and life. Although she is autistic, she thrives in everything she sets her mind to. Prior to the incident, Willow had a deep fear of dogs so was immensely traumatized by this attack - so much so she had to be tranquilized before anyone in the ED could touch her. Even throughout the terror of this experience her spirits have not faltered.

Willow has had surgery to correct her hand, and has a long road to recovery with upcoming occupational therapy. She has started to see a therapist to work through the trauma of the attack.

As we all know, the burden falls on us as parents to ensure our children are safe and healthy. My daughter Sara is a hardworking single mother of 3 juggling a full time job, a part time job, and is also struggling to ensure the best care for Willow’s recovery.
