Hello, my name is Blue. I’m 28 years old and I’m a non-binary and transmasculine person living in Nottingham.
I started my medical transition in 2016. In 2018, when I was referred to the Nottingham gender clinic, I was able to start hormone replacement therapy. Since then, I have waited 3 years for contact regarding my top surgery, following my surgery referral in early 2018.
Unfortunately, due to the current immense strain on the NHS gender clinics from increasing referrals, cut funding, and the impact of the pandemic, my surgery referral was lost in the system and I have fallen in between the administrative cracks. Upsettingly, stories of lost referrals are very common problem in the NHS gender clinics, and like me, many have devastatingly resulted in being discharged completely from the gender clinic and referral system.
I will subsequently have to go through the whole process again. This includes getting signatures from doctors, waiting and being referred back to the hospital, and then waiting a minimum of 3-5+ years for contact, meaning that if I went this route I likely would not even hear from anyone until at least 2025. This is not an option for me as the stress from this entire experience has significantly impacted my mental health. The weight of knowing that I waited this long only to have to do it all again is too overwhelming, which is why I have decided to contact a private surgeon with a shorter waiting list.
Due to my gender dysphoria, I have been binding for almost 13 years, and this discomfort and toll on my body is something I have had to adjust my life around. This is why I’m now making this fundraiser and asking for your support.
Specifically, I’m raising the funds to see a private specialist surgeon in London. I have contacted the clinic, await my first consultation and have received all the information regarding payment.
Breakdown of costs:
Surgery and Aftercare: £8850
Thank you so much to everyone that donates, shares and has read this post. I hope you all know how much it means to have your continued support. I’m excited to receive this surgery so that I can move forward in my life. In the future I’d like to be a piercer for trans people and create art spaces and events with a focus on giving back to the community, and your support enables me to do this.
