Sweden Passed a Cruel Law. Now Sex Workers Are Paying the Price.

On 20 May 2025, the Swedish Parliament passed a new law expanding the criminalisation of sex work to include digital services such as webcamming, content creation, and other remote work. It’s a devastating blow to our community. You can read our statement here for more information.

And guess who’s left to clean up the mess? We are.

At Red Umbrella Sweden (RUS), we are already witnessing the impact:

We are receiving a flood of emails from sex workers who are scared, angry, and uncertain about their future. Many are desperate, asking how to survive, how to pay rent, how to stay safe.

Meanwhile, the Swedish government has done nothing to help. Not one krona. Not one word of support.

We’ve never received public funding because under Sweden’s outdated pimping laws, simply supporting sex workers is treated as suspicious. So now, like always, we step in with what little we have. But we can’t do this alone. We need your help.

Who are we?

Red Umbrella Sweden (RUS) is a Swedish organisation advocating for the rights, safety, justice and self-determination of sex workers. All our members are current or former sex workers with lived experience of doing sex work. Sex workers include anyone who trades sexual services for material gain of any kind. This means cam workers, strippers, street based sex workers, erotic massage workers, brothel workers, full service workers, porn actors, content creators.
