The Mousa immediate family consists of 8 people. Father, mother, son Bahaa (who I speak to), brothers Bilal and Muhammad, and sisters Mina (age 6), Tasneem, and Haneen.
Haneen is married and has two children-their names are Mahmoud, who is 3 years old, and Amir, who is 2 years old. She is still in the south currently.
Bahaa was originally displaced from his home to Haneen's house, but after a period of displacement, two days before a checkpoint was placed, they returned to the north of Gaza. Their neighbor's house was bombed, and there were 33 martyrs.
The Mousa home was targeted by IDF tanks. Huge shells were fired at the house, and they were surrounded for 7 days. They hid with nowhere safe to go. All of the windows and doors were left broken and shattered. Huge bullet holes remain all over. The tanks were just a few feet away from them. It's a miracle that they survived. They are currently living inside what remains of their family home.
Due to this siege, they are suffering from a lack of gas, and must rely on collecting and lighting firewood in order to boil water and cook the food. Every morning Bahaa goes to very dangerous places in order to gather firewood. They have to do this under the hot sun in temperatures north of 90F, and under sounds of the Israeli Aircraft. They put their lives at risk in order to survive. Collecting water is also very tiring and difficult. They lift approximately 30 buckets of water every day for very long distances.
Bahaa is currently in the area of the Gaza strip being affected by famine. Prices for food have gone up 4x, and it's very hard to come by. They have to travel long distances to collect from aid centers, or look for a market. Despite this, he feeds the neighborhood stray cats when he can. He also has a pet bird and cat to take care of.
Back in February, Bahaa went to the Nabulsi area for the first time in order to buy flour. The Quadcopter planes started shooting into the crowd, as the tanks fired shells at them from the ground. He carried the flour approximately 5.5 miles on foot, and was subjected to violence from some people who wanted to steal it. The tanks were always nearby. The next time he went to Nabulsi for flour, the IDF killed his cousin who went with him.
In Bahaa's own words, this is how he recounts that day:
It was a very, very painful and dangerous day. It was February 25, 2024. When I took the flour, it was 5:15AM. I arrived home at approximately 8:30PM. I swear to God, a whole month later, I was still having nightmares of the bombings. I remember the sound of the bullets. I remember the sound of the tank shells. I remember how the tank was a few meters away from us. I remember the young men who were martyred. I remember the young men who were wounded. It was a day full of violence and danger. I don’t know how to explain the horror I saw...
