Community organizers from Step Up Center, who are themselves immigrants, in collaboration with Providence General Assembly are fundraising for an immediate housing need and other support for immigrants. A family living in RI with a single mother and her children have missed several rent payments. Current goal is set at $3,000 (1st month and security deposit for a new place). The current landlord has started eviction. At this time they have no place to go that is affordable and safe. The husband had been the main source of income and rent payments. However, due to the husband’s domestic violence in the home he is no longer living there, which is a good thing but, is also no longer providing. The mother is starting to work but, it is not yet able to earn enough to make ends meet. She needs help while she stabilizes herself and her family.

Leaders from Step Up Center have served the community since 2000. They started with ESL programs and student tutoring and quickly grew to immigration advocacy, music programs for children and other churches and even Spanish classes! Their mission is to live their faith through empathy and compassion by sharing support, resources, advocacy, and volunteering opportunities with all families and individuals who seek or provide guidance, justice, cultural expression, and access to life sustaining services.

The Providence General Assembly is an open, democratic movement space that meets regularly where all antifascist and truly progressive forces can coordinate and strategize a way to fight back, a way to build a better world. We will collectively decide how to coordinate with anyone willing to help defend immigrants or LGBTQ people from attack, to find ways to help bolster solidarity efforts with P/alestine, to organize with workers and tenants, or to coordinate with mutual aid and emergency preparation. Our strength is our solidarity and the mutual aid we are able to extend to each other.

These two entities have begun working together.
