Given the recent SCOTUS news about Roe v. Wade, I have shared a very important personal story with family and friends that I hope fosters openness and empowers others in their own reproductive health journey. I am happy to share my story with you too - just let me know!
In the meantime, know that this photo was taken hours after I delivered my miscarriage in secret, for fear of shame from my faith, my family, and others. After the delivery, I went on a 2.5-mile hike with ~1,000 ft elevation. I wanted to go on that hike- that was my choice. I am proud of my physical and mental strength from that moment. I felt compelled to make it all the way to the summit, where there’s a rock you can climb to look out over Sterling Pond. I am so proud, that I had my sister take a photo of me perched on that rock, overlooking the serene, still water, and I made that my Facebook profile picture for 6 months – as a secret reminder that I am a strong woman.
Planned Parenthood, my OBGYN, and an amazing support system helped me so much leading up to this moment. 2 weeks prior, upon learning of my pregnancy, I was afraid of and hated my body. I cursed my memory for causing a misstep in my birth control pill adherence. I could not forgive myself for having made a mistake after so painstakingly abiding by safety and birth control precautions. Planned Parenthood helped me to forgive myself, helped educate me on my options, referred me to community and religious support services, calmed my nerves, and assured me I would be ok. They explained safer, more effective methods of birth control, like implants that can be safely inserted into the arms or uterus, which were relatively new options since I last took a sex-ed class. I learned so much and felt so empowered to make an informed decision about my body.
Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide. Planned Parenthood also lobbies at the state and federal levels to uphold and enact laws that protect women's access to quality sex education, healthcare, and liberty over their own bodies. We must protect those ideals and those women.
At its core, Roe v Wade is not about religion, political party affiliation, or morality. It is about sex education, women's health, and women's rights (read: human rights). As a proud American, I believe in my right to my own life, liberty over my own body, and the pursuit of happiness based upon the options that largely depend on access to quality education and healthcare.
The Supreme Court does not make its decisions based on religion, political party affiliation, or morality. It rules based on its interpretation of the law that is in existence today. At this point in time, it is highly likely Roe v Wade will be overturned, which means greater access to sex education, women's health, and women's liberty over their bodies will not be protected under federal law.
Please help me to provide women with access to sex education, quality healthcare, and liberty over their own bodies by donating to Planned Parenthood, so PP may provide those services to women in need. It will mean the world to me!
