Meaningful Miles For Haiti
Donation protected
THE SHORT: It’s fun to run – but better to run for a purpose! I’m running the Philadelphia Marathon on Nov. 18 and I am hoping to raise $1,300 ($50 per mile) to help support my dear friend Annaliese’s mission work in Haiti, which primarily includes the construction of a brand new school in Haiti to support 80 students.
THE LONG: I’m a big believer in education and its ability to help us ALL live meaningful and productive lives. In Haiti, a majority of kids (and adults) do not have access to a quality education. The enrollment rate for primary school is 57% and fewer than 30% of students reach 6th grade. Haiti ranks 177th out of 186 in the world for national spending on education.
My dear friend Annaliese, who currently teaches fourth grade special education in an urban district outside of St. Louis, has been doing mission trips to Haiti for three years. Two years ago, she lived in Haiti and taught at a school for an entire year! Since then, she’s traveled to and from Haiti multiple times, spending time with children in the St. Marc area. Annaliese works with a faith-based nonprofit, Mission 1:11, that has many constant and consistent ties to the Haitian people. They are heavily involved in one school named Cannot School. They have sponsors for each of the 80 children and the school is fully supported through Mission 1:11. One of their goals in the near future is to build a new school in 2019-2020 to replace the current school. The school is one building, made of wood and tin, which houses four grades and 80 students. The hope is to expand the school and add more grades with a new building. This will provide more children the opportunity for an education. It costs about $15,000 to operate the school for a year, which includes weekly meals, teacher salary and supplies.
On November 18th, I will run the Philadelphia Marathon in my hometown! This will be my second marathon. This time around, I would love for the miles I run to directly support a project that will positively impact the lives of young children while raising awareness of the importance of education.
Whether you give $1, $10 or $100 dollars, your donation will make a positive difference and I personally promise to update you on the success of the Cannot school!! Thank you for your support! Let's do this!!!
