Thomas Johnston was born on July 30th. He is only 2 minutes younger than his twin brother Jackson Robert. Since birth he has been fighting for his life in the NICU. Thomas was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and pulmonary hypertension. The hernia caused Thomas's abdominal organs to grow into his chest cavity and limit the growth of his lungs. Days after birth, Thomas had surgery to move his organs so that his lungs had an opportunity to grow and function. He was placed on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Machine (ECMO) which is a technique to provide long-term breathing and heart support when all other standard treatments have been tried.
