60 years young: my bid for Ms Universe

Hi, my name is Wendy, and I’m fundraising for the opportunity to compete in the Ms Universe bodybuilding competition. The competition is to be held in Birmingham, UK on November 3rd.

The Universe competition is the oldest and most recognized bodybuilding contest in the world. Representing Australia on this prestigious stage is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and at 60, I have this golden opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream. I never expected this to ever happen for me but here I am and it’s just a few short weeks away.

### Why is this important?

Have you ever asked yourself, “If you could change anything about your life, what would it be?” I asked myself this very question at age 52, weighing 127 kg and trapped in a domestic abuse situation. My mental health was in decline, and I had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic condition that made my life even more challenging. I decided it was time to take control of my life and follow a simple mandate: "Will this make me happy?"

That was back in 2017. Fast forward seven and a half years, and I’m 60 years old, 60 kg lighter, and stronger than I’ve ever been! My journey from struggling with my weight and health to competing on stage as a bodybuilder has been nothing short of transformative. Along the way, I’ve shared my story on social media, inspiring others who face similar challenges. Today, my Instagram account, @wendyfit_, has become a community of like-minded individuals who draw strength from each other.

All your donations will go towards travel costs (return flights, airport shuttles, car rental or Ubers, currency conversion, airport fees, travel insurance) and accommodation (probably an airBnB so I can cook my own food). I've paid for my passport and a generous sponsor has agreed to pay my competition costs.
