Liam arrived at Animal Allies on the morning of May 25th. He was found by two very concerned good Samaritans who had spotted him on the shoulder of a rural road. He was extremely emaciated and the only sign that he was alive, at first glance, was the fact that he was blinking. We tested him for parvo, giardia, and lepto–desperate to find an explanation for his condition rather than admit that he was simply starved.

He is around 10 weeks old and weighs about 6 pounds when he should be around 20 pounds. He has had a strong appetite and is currently on a strict diet schedule where he gets about 10 tiny meals a day so that he doesn’t get sick with refeeding syndrome. We were able to get some radiographs and blood work done at a local clinic. His x-rays showed a metal staple and several small gravel-like stones in his stomach: he was probably trying to eat anything he could find.

Liam is extremely anemic and we still aren’t sure why. For now, he’s being treated with doxycycline in case his anemia is caused by a tick-borne illness.

He is still too weak to walk on his own, but in the last two days he has gone from only being able to barely lift his head to being able to stand for several seconds while assisted. He is still extremely sick and very fragile; his case is still very much touch-and-go.

While his condition is dire and we are still unsure of what his outcome will be, he has made great progress. We are hopeful that with some TLC and palliative care he will overcome his current obstacles and grow up to be a boisterous husky.

We named him Liam because it means “strong-willed warrior.”
