This isn't my story, but yet the story of an ordinary person who stopped the loss of MANY lives. (Elisjsha Dicken)
On Sunday July 17th 2022 Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, IN - a pleasant suburb of Indianapolis, IN - was the scene of an attempted mass shooting. The shooter emerged from the bathroom of a very popular and thriving mall with 2 rifles, a pistol, and several magazines - firing shots into a busy Food Court. 1 mall patron was shot, and then their spouse. At this point 22 year old Elisjsha (per news reports) told his girlfriend to get down, and proceeded to tactically sneak up on the shooter with just a 9mm pistol. While he moved toward the shooter he motioned for those hiding to run & get away as he put himself between them and the shooter.
Elisjsha's first shots were from an incredible 40-50 yards away with his pistol. Those managed to penetrate the shooter and from there the bloodshed ended with just 3 killed (4 including the shooter) and a couple victims who are expected to recover.
I don't know this Elisjsha Dicken, but I am so remarkably proud and thankful for his actions.
He had no prior training, he had no responsibility to put his life at risk, and while others were running - he put himself between them and the shooter to protect them.
I wish to honor Elisjsha with a token of appreciation from the community in the form of this gofundme. After seeing this bravery, selflessness, and quick thinking - I have hopes that we can raise the money to help him pay off any debts from education, allow him to afford the education/training he desires, or just remove any burden he may be facing right now.
I will not retain ANY of this money. It will be distributed 100% to Elisjsha Dicken, or a charity of his choosing (minus any gofundme fees).
To tell you about me personally my name is Chris, I grew up in Greenwood, IN and I never imagined this sort of thing would happen here so close to home. I also never imagined I would be so close to such an event. I was 100 yards away in DSG when shooting started; had my thoughts played out differently, I would've been in the food court getting cookies for my wife and kids when the shooting started.
As far as accountability for any money collected - I am an elected official in Franklin Township, and hold a publicly searchable License, as an RN. You can rest assured the money will be distributed as promised - if for some reason that is not possible, it will be split equally and dispersed amongst the victims (or their families).
