Im writing this as a plea for for a dog friend dealing with a heart wrenching situation. Her beautiful 5-year old daughter, Kali, has been fighting stage 4 cancer. Kali's journey has been filled with countless hospital visits, rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and many surgeries. Her doggie brother, a Great Dane named Bane, has been by her side as her (unofficial) "Assistance Dog".
Recently, Kali required emergency hospitalization 2 hours away. Bane escaped the home, clearly looking for HIS human, Kali. He was picked up by animal control but required quite a significant reclaim fee…. as the law allows. She had no choice but to use her car payment to get Kali's dog back. But, now he has kennel cough and needs veterinary care.
Kali and Bane's mom understands that the shelter cannot keep dogs for free while owners are looking. This is a mother of six, struggling to make ends meet. The last thing she needed was her daughter’s best friend, Bane, to be away from her. She had no other option but to use her car payment to pay the reclaim fees. We all know what veterinary care costs these days. We are all worried for this family who NEVER asked for financial help. But, they are clearly in need and I am reaching out on their behalf
Seeing this dog’s amazing life in photos and videos is truly heartwarming and the thought that she gave all she had to bring her family back together shows a true animal lover .
She never asked for anything . Someone else reached out to get help with treating kennel cough he contracted at the shelter. I met her and I asked her what was going on. Again, she never asked, but truly is in need.
A few of us in dog rescue thought it was only appropriate to pay it forward for being a strong woman, amazing mother to her children and an owner who loves her dog like the FAMILY they truly are.

Bane the Assistance Dog
The bond between Kali and Bane is incredibly special. When Kali was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer about a year ago, he knew what he needed to do.
This beautiful dog, with no assistance dog training, no fancy classes to get certified....simply went to work.
Bane comforts Kali after her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He snuggles with her while she recovers from surgeries. During bath time he is right there with her, laying on the floor. When her medical equipment starts beeping, Bane comes and alerts mom.
The Emergency Room Trip
On March 12th , in the middle of the night, Kali spiked a fever. Chemotherapy has killed off the bulk of her immune system, so a fever becomes an immediate medical emergency. The hospital is two hours away. Kali would be getting I.V. antibiotics as an inpatient for an entire week.
Bane is incredibly bonded to Kali. He realizes something his wrong. HIS human, Kali, is not there. He HAS TO find her and gets out.
Bane is Picked up by the Animal Shelter
Bane is picked up by the local Animal Shelter. Although he is microchipped, the scanner doesnt pick it up so nobody knows where he is. She is not called.
Kali Comes Home
Kali is finally sent home. Her mom has to tell her about Bane. Losing him was devastating for her and the entire family. The fees to get Bane out of the shelter are just too steep.
Kali's mom made the difficult decision to use her car payment to get Bane out of the shelter. He is home now. But, although he was already fully vaccinated, he now has kennel cough. He was coughing up old blood. Danes are large, but are a delicate breed and susceptible to getting pneumonia.
But the stress of the shelter and not having his Kali while she spent a week in the hospital caused him to get sick. He needs veterinary care. The family is doing everything they can, but the financial strain is more than they can bear alone.
We are reaching out to ask for your support during this incredibly difficult time. Your prayers for Kali and Bane’s health mean the world to us, and any financial help you can offer would be a lifeline for this family. Your generosity will help cover medical and veterinary bills, car payment, daily expenses, and the costs of caring for both Kali and Bane. Thank you for considering a donation and for keeping this family in your thoughts and prayers.
In addition, if anyone has experience and can help with Bane and his Official "Assistance Dog" certification that would be a HUGE help. Since, Bane was looking for Kali when he got out.
