To know Mack Brown and be loved by Mack Brown is one of the greatest privileges of my life, and if you’ve had the pleasure of having this person in your life as a friend, partner, roommate, colleague, director, associate, wingman, leader, SSPA director, or a friendly face of a stranger that’s helped you up when you slipped on the subway-- it is without a doubt you likely share a similar experience. If anyone in Mack’s life’s hands are too full, we so often turn around to find Mack standing there already holding the door open-- before it’s even occurred to us that we need a hand. That’s Mack Brown, and that’s why I’m writing this because it’s Mack’s turn to stand at the doors of an incredibly exciting step and essential step in their transition, & it’s our turn to help hold open this door for our dear friend, collaborator, trusted colleague, and exceptionally patient cat dad.

If you’re reading this and you experience any level of dysphoria then you probably understand the extent to which the depth of distraction and suffering that dysphoria causes at a daily, hourly, and even by-the-minute-ly level. If you don’t experience dysphoria, it may be complex to grasp just how much of an insurmountable burden this can be. To know that we can collectively come together to help rid our beloved friend of such a daily level of pain is so hopeful, especially in a time when not a day goes by without Trans people being targeted in legislation and our country.

Top surgery is a treatment that should be accessible and available to everyone, and I don’t think I’ve met anyone who believes that more than Mack Brown. Mack really fucking cares, and it shows in their work, their life, the small moments, and how they show up in any situation.

To know that one such member of our trans family has a chance to alleviate their daily experience of dysphoria permanently is so exciting and essential to our trans family. Because if there’s anything true about MB, it’s that when Mack Brown wins--we all win. Because not only are they always holding doors open for others, but the minute they climb one ladder, they’re turning around and pulling us up with them.
