In November 2019, I moved to northern California with my beloved mustang mare Bridget who I have partnered with for over 17 years. Two hours after walking off the trailer, Bridget started showing signs of a serious undiagnosed neurologic disorder. I leveraged every single ounce of credit and savings I had to try and get to the bottom of her disorder. Bridget likely contracted neurologic Lyme's disease which is fatal and incurable. With a team of veterinary experts, I have found a combination of medications and treatment that keeps her stable, happy and comfortable for the time that she has left. She was not expected to live past one year following her initial symptoms, but she is still going strong. She is even now helping a young student learn to canter for the first time.
I don't regret anything I have done for my girl...she is my family. She is the kindest, gentlest horse I have ever met. If I had to do it over again, I would still spend the money doing everything I could to save her and let her live out what time she has left comfortable and happy.
I have, however, been plunged into financial ruin. I borrowed $25,000 from my partner initially and have now charged $40,000 in credit card debt in the process of trying to diagnose Bridget and keep up with her monthly medications, supplements, and treatments. On average, I spend over $2000 per month just on maintenance for her.
I am reaching out because I have no other option. I have been making the minimum payments on my cards, but soon I will not be able to afford even that. I urgently need to start paying down balances on my cards. If I cannot, I will have to file for bankruptcy.
