The Massachusetts Daily Collegian has maintained its important role as the only student-run newspaper at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for over 125 years.
As many of you may know, the Collegian has been paying back a loan from the Student Government Association for over 10 years now. At present, the Collegian is expected to pay the remaining $32,500 of this loan back to the SGA by December 2022. This has existed as a significant source of financial stress over the organization's leadership for over a decade, and in conjunction with the Covid-19 pandemic, has most recently limited the Collegian's ability to function as a newspaper.
Currently, no one on the Collegian staff receives payroll, and print — the paper's greatest source of revenue — has been cut entirely. We, as alumni of the Collegian, are starting this fundraiser to assist with paying down the SGA loan in the short term, so that the staff can focus on what is really important — editorial coverage and holding the University accountable at such an important time.
As the University and the student body attempt to navigate back-to-school during a pandemic, the Collegian has continued to provide quality, independent journalism to the campus community.

Disclosure: As this fundraiser is being organized by Collegian alumni, donations will be collected by organizers Hayley Johnson and Amin Touri, and immediately turned over to current Collegian Business Manager Zach Polak. A detailed accounting of any withdrawn funds will also be kept and shared with any appropriate Collegian staffers, and every dollar will go directly to the Collegian.
