On Saturday evening, August 16, I finished my ER shift and stepped away from my computer, and I got one of the worst phone calls I've ever received. My brother Blake, who is 30 years old and completely healthy, had a sudden collapse while visiting family in Muskegon. His wife started CPR after he was found to have no pulse. When EMS arrived on scene he was found to be in cardiac arrest, and was shocked 3 times. They were able to get him back and he was rushed to Mercy Health Hospital where he was intubated and sent to the cardiac cath lab. He was found to have clear coronary arteries with no signs of heart attack and also had no evidence of brain bleed or pulmonary embolus. His bloodwork showed no electrolyte abnormalities & EEG showed no evidence of seizure. At this point, they have no clue what caused it. Their best guess is some sort of arrhythmia. He will likely need an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) that will be implanted in his chest and will deliver a lifesaving shock to his heart if he ever were to have a life threatening arrhythmia again. He remains in the ICU, on a ventilator, and sedation has just been stopped. He is starting to open his eyes and follow some simple commands, but his full neurologic status is yet to be known. He and his wife will need so much continued support and prayers in the coming days and weeks. We are so thankful to God that he is alive & so thankful to everyone who has been praying and loving on our families in the last 48 hours. If you have a desire to support them financially during this time it would be greatly appreciated ❤️
