What I believe is one of the most important, transformative events I will participate in as an artist/creator. Pow.

I was selected to be a part of Urban Bush Women\'s (UBW) 2011 Summer Leadership Institute and will travel to New Orleans this July to participate.  UBW is a 26 year old Brooklyn-based Cultural Arts Organization with the mission to \"create dance and to create community.\" UBW does this work from a woman-centered perspective.  

The Summer Leadership Institute is a 10-day intensive that connects dance professionals and community-based artists in a learning experience to leverage the arts as a vehicle for social activism and civic engagement and to strengthen the national network of community arts practitioners. 

Sounds great Jess, but why is this so \"important and transformative\"? 

I am a part of a cadre of creatives/cultural workers/entrepreneurs working at the frontiers, building frames of reference for what we do, creating language that doesn\'t exist yet. Can I get a witness?! I\'m always looking for members of my tribe.  Many of them will be dancing with me in New Orleans. :) The Saartjie Project, the theatre ensemble I dreamt up in 2008 is evolving into a cultural arts organization and Urban Bush Women\'s existence and beauty affirms our work. 

I\'m full of gratitude for this experience already.
