Long story short: Adi has been struggling with Lyme Disease for 16 years. He is houseless and very sick. He needs our financial support to begin treatment as soon as possible.
Why this is urgent: Recently things have intensified substantially, which is saying a lot considering what Adi has survived over the past decade and a half. Several months ago he went from being housebound to being houseless and living in his car. Adi also has Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS, which is exacerbated by the Lyme and makes living in a car even more difficult than it would be already for the average person. MCS means that you physically become ill in response to everyday particulates and chemicals that many people do not even notice. This includes things like perfumes, fuel, detergents, soaps, plastics, pollen, dust (the list is endless) and this is not simply a dislike or a headache - this causes a huge wave of allergy-like inflammation throughout his entire body that is cumulative and lasts for days with each exposure. Worse, each exposure increases his overall sensitivity. Last week Adi stepped in soap in a public restroom and is now allergic to his shoes even after washing them. Adi had to get a coat recently because Winter is coming and so are the colder temperatures. He is now very sick from the chemicals in the coat. He had to take the risk in order to stay warm. There is no end to exposures when you are forced to use public restrooms, have no kitchen to cook in, and have to be parked in public places where you are constantly surrounded by people wearing perfume, smoking outside your car, or sitting in their cars nearby and allowing the motors to run. This sensitivity will continue to grow until he gets treatment. For this and so many reasons, treatment is urgent. Because he was housebound for so long, Adi doesn't know a lot of people with financial privilege. Many of his friends have Lyme Disease and therefore are also financially stretched. His ability to receive treatment depends upon the generosity and compassion of strangers.
Plans for treatment: Adi plans to remain living in his car and all donations will go toward treatment at a clinic in Sonoma County, California that specializes in treating Lyme Disease and co-infections. Treatment for Lyme Disease is expensive and there are a lot of initial costs. We set our first goal at $15,000 to cover Adi's consultation with a doctor, testing, supplements, and some treatment. Those of us who have struggled with Lyme can attest to how expensive it is to begin treatment. Because there are a lot of initial costs, Adi needs a large chunk of money to even get started. If you can donate now, that would be ideal. If you can't donate now and can later, please consider doing that as well - the funds will be needed. Treatment is expected to cost more than $15,000 over time, and it is vital that once treatment has begun Adi will be able to continue on with it. This campaign does not have a deadline. Donations of all sizes are appreciated at any time. I will be sending out updates along the way so that you can get to know Adi, be kept up to speed about how the treatment is going, and know specifically funds will be needed for at any given time.
The Adi we love: Now let me share who Adi is, for those of you who do not know him personally. Adi is all heart. He lives for justice and to love the people in his life. He is funny. He is positive. He is honest. He is a survivor. He emotionally supports so many people in the Lyme community and beyond with his love and compassion. He asks for nothing in return. I've had to ask several times over the past few months if I could please begin a fundraising campaign, and finally he has agreed, but he was only willing to do so if the funds went toward treatment, not housing. Recently Adi spread the word about a fundraiser my friends began to get me a sauna. A sauna. He doesn't have a bed to lay in, but he wanted me to have a sauna. He wrote to me about how much joy it brought him when the goal was reached. Many of you have never met Adi, but I promise you, even when he is living in his car he is making this world a better place. Imagine what would be possible for him and the world if he were able to get his needs met? That is a world I want to live in. So many of us love Adi. He brightens our lives immensely and brings us the strength we need to keep walking our own paths. I'm asking from the deepest of depths to please contribute whatever you can. Let's get creative and figure this out. Maybe donate in honor of loved ones instead of buying them a Christmas gift. Please spread the word to anyone you know. Share, share, share. Many hands and hearts make light work. Let's do this!
