Legal Fund HH - Sexual Assault Victim of Sean Chu
Most of you know me as HH. I am the victim of a violent sexual assault by Calgary Police Officer Cst Sean Chu. I was a 16 year old student. He was a 34 year old Police Officer with a gun. He is now a City Councillor with the City of Calgary. I immediately reported what happened to the appropriate authorities. Sean Chu admitted to most details including the graphic sexual details. He eventually received a letter of reprimand on his police file for five years. It took me many years of legal fighting to even reach that point. I never gave any consent, nor was consent legally possible. https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-46/section-153.html
Recently a Calgary reporter wrote about some of that story. I was not consulted, nor have I publicly spoken. More stories followed, most missing crucial details. I have not spoken publicly out of fear from substantial harassment, severe threats, concern for my family and my employment.
Since the news stories were written, I have been forced to take on extensive legal expenses to keep my identity protected and to try to keep myself and my family safe. Several people including a news outlet have made my identity known. I have received substantial threats, my home and vehicle have been targeted, I was forced to take months of unpaid leave from work and I have had my work hours impacted. My family has been impacted as well. Many of the people threatening and harassing me are powerful and wealthy. Stories like mine threaten to expose them or to remove their power. They go to great lengths to keep me silent. Many days it feels hard to just breathe.
Being a victim is incredibly expensive. Especially the costs associated with legal representation. In order to help ensure my safety and that of my family, I need help with these costs. I need to obtain legal protection from those threatening me and those that have released my identity.
Many of you know me but not my story. I work with many of you, I volunteer with you, I am on charity boards with you, I play sports with you, your children go to school with mine.
For all of you who have bravely advocated for me, I see you, I hear you and I appreciate you more than you know. If it is ever safe enough, I hope to thank you personally one day. You give me the courage to fight.
No victim should live in fear. You can help me stop that fear and to make Calgary safer for all victims.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me.
