Austin Bolender is a 13 year old boy who has battled Leukemia and had a Bone Marrow Transplant almost five years ago. Since August 2019 during a routine lab check his platelets were lower than normal. Since then he has had multiple blood draws and two lumbar punctures along with two bone marrow biopsies. His team of doctors at Kaiser Oakland and UCSF Mission Bay have been running many tests to rule out a relapse as well as any viruses or infections. He's had ultrasounds, CT scan, x-rays and weekly law draws. Unfortunately, his platelets continue to drop but the positive side is all tests have been negative.
Today (Jan 27th 2020), he had a bone marrow biopsy and were looking to see if he has MDS. If MDS is present, he will need another bone marrow transplant right away as it can lead to cancer. Unfortunately, he's been battling a fever and after his bone marrow test this morning he was admitted as he now has a rash all over his body and a very high fever.
The Bolenders have been down this road before and it's so unfair that they are here again with so many unanswered questions.
Any donation will help them in this time of need as they both will have to miss many days of work figuring this out. If another bone marrow transplant is needed that will be a long hospital stay - possibly four or five months.
