In October 2017 Lou was laid off from his long term contracting position due to budget cuts. As the sole provider for his family he knew he needed to find something fast. Although not a good fit, he accepted a lower paying temporary position to pay the bills. Karen and Lou’s youngest child of 3, Kiana, was scheduled for eye surgery in December. Because Lou was a contractor, the medical insurance that the family had cost as much as a mortgage and the annual deductible was sky high. Kiana’s surgery as well as all doctor visits and tests for the family had to be paid out of pocket. With the lower paying position the family began to struggle to pay all their monthly and medical bills. The position ended in March of 2018. Lou searched for 6 weeks to find another job. At the end of April he decided to take a chance on a start-up company at an even lower salary. As is the case with many start-ups, things didn’t go as planned and Lou became unemployed again on June 1st. Although he is working tirelessly to find another position he has not yet been able to. The family is months behind on all their bills including the mortgage and medical bills. They have also recently been notified that due to a reassessment, their mortgage has increased by $800/month! They have been trying desperately to keep up and are now in a dire situation. With 3 children ages 11, 9 and (almost) 2, plus 2 dogs (one of which needs to be neutered in the next few months), the family realizes they are out of options.
