On the 28th of June, during a family vacation in Colorado, my closest friend Calum was told he was no longer welcome at his home. His bank account was drained and his phone’s data plan was cancelled. Abandoned, he stayed in a motel overnight before he could fly back to Pennsylvania to retrieve his items. Although he is now safe with my family and I, this has caused both emotional and financial stress. Calum is selling most of his clothing and belongs, and beginning a new job next week (July 9th). With college soon on the horizon, however, we’re not sure if the minimum wage we earn now will be able to cover both transportation to UCLA, textbooks, and bedding for his dorm. Most of the money he makes now would be best saved.


Anyone that knows Calum, on a professional or personal level, can attest to the fact that he is a fantastic, hard-working and empathetic young man. He worked so hard during high school and overcame significant obstacles to reach his collegiate dreams— this sort of money based anxiety feels unfair and cruel to pop up out of nowhere.
