To know the Gacek family is to love the Gacek family…and right now they need our love and support more than ever.
In May, Anne was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, a very rare disease effecting less than 200,000 people a year that has caused her immune system to attack her liver.
Anne’s transplant and treatment team are hopeful that a rigorous course of medications will stop the liver damage that is occurring and allow the liver time to regenerate to avoid transplant; however, doctors continue to work on a proper protocol as the current course of medications is not working as expected. She is currently completing the steps per the transplant protocol, so she can officially be placed on the national transplant list.
In the meantime, Anne’s new home away from home has become a hospital room a The University of Kansas Medical Center. Frequent inpatient stays have become part of the Gacek family’s new normal, as Anne’s body fights to heal.
For months, Anne and Mike have respectfully declined the numerous requests from friends and family members to allow their huge tribe to help. They are the last people to ask or help, but the first people to offer it.
Nobody plans for this. To go to the ER on a Thursday thinking you have the flu, only to have your life changed forever. Anne has been unable to work for months, and past, current, and future medical bills the Gaceks are facing would promise to overwhelm the most financially fit. So, with Mike and Anne’s blessing, please consider making a donation to help ease the stress of the situation and allow the Gaceks to focus on Anne’s health. Thank you!
