Shelley Louise Bettencourt Tillman and Leon Moses Tillman Sr are my parents. They've been together for 20 years through sickness and through health and back through sickness again. I was only a sophomore in high school when my parents sat my sister and I down to tell us "daddy's kidneys are failing." Less than a year later his kidney function dropped below 11% and he was placed on the transplant list. He also has to go through dialysis every night. About three years later, towards the end of my first year of college, I recieved a call saying my mother had been hospitalized. There was a tumor in her brain which came back positive for cancer. At the same time my dad had found a match for a kidney transplant and preparation for his surgery had begun. The moment was bittersweet. We were all excited for my dad but extremely worried about my mom. The excitement didn't last long, after a few weeks of anticipation the transplant fell through. My dad was devastated, as were we; it was depressing to be so close and end up empty handed. My mom had brain surgery and had the tumor removed and is currently going through radiation and chemotherapy trying to beat brain cancer. My dad is still going through dialysis every night awaiting a kidney. Both are currently out of work and need help with medical expenses and bills. My sister and I try to do what we can to help but we're both still in school. It's difficult to see your heroes, the people who raised you, struggle and hurt but we're keeping our spirits high. Please help me to help my parents while they're fighting their medical battles.
