Crown Our Dream: Help Shine by JP Bring “Crowns” to Roanoke

In a time when the erasure of African American culture and history threatens the existence of our beautiful heritage, stories like this one must shine.

At Shine by JP, we believe in the transformative power of the arts to celebrate our history, build community, and empower the next generation. As a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Roanoke, Virginia, we’re preparing to stage the celebrated musical “Crowns” by Regina Taylor — live at the Historic Dumas Theatre on Henry Street, a landmark of African American artistry and resilience.

Why “Crowns”?

Based on the book Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, this gospel-infused play follows Yolanda, a young woman who rediscovers faith and heritage through her grandmother and a circle of churchwomen in the South.

The hats — the crowns — become powerful symbols of dignity, hope, and identity. Through gospel music, dance, and storytelling, “Crowns” honors the spirit, humor, and holiness of Black womanhood and the wisdom passed through generations.

Our Vision

This production will:

Celebrate Heritage: Uplift the untold stories of Black women who are the backbone of our churches and communities.

Bridge Generations: Unite elders and youth through shared culture, faith, and creativity.

Inspire Hope: Prove that our art and stories are not relics — they are alive, radiant, and resilient.

Meet the Organizers

This project is led by a dedicated team rooted in the Roanoke community, bringing decades of experience in ministry, education, and the arts: Robert Jeffrey and Kristin Jeffrey. Their vision is the driving force ensuring this powerful, professional production uplifts local talent and honors the legacy of the Dumas Theatre.

How You Can Help
