My name is Reuben and my beloved Harley-Quinn, my best friend, is very ill and requires life saving treatment with multiple blood transfusions. She is currently in critical care at Sydney University Veterinary Hospital and has been since Monday 28 June.
Miss Harley recently turned 3. Everyone who knows her or comes across her is mesmerised by her energy and athleticism so it’s been a huge shock to learn that she has developed Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA).
IMHA is a serious and life threatening condition that affects both dogs and cats. It means that their immune system, which typically fights off invaders and infections, is now fighting its own red blood cells and destroying them.
Harley has received 4 blood transfusions so far in order to stabilise her. Unfortunately the vets have advised that she will most likely require more transfusions until or unless the medication starts to take effect. Each transfusion comes at a cost of $1200 to $1500, plus there is ongoing hospital costs of approx $700 per day.
The cost of Harley’s treatment to date (as of Friday 2 July) stands at $8125 and counting. The hospital has indicated it may end up around $16,000 if things go well.. There is additional treatment of another $14,000 to $17,000 she might need if the current treatment doesn't work. Unfortunately none of this is covered by pet insurance.
Harley is my whole heart and I will do anything to save her. I have covered the current bill ($8,125) and will do everything in my power to continue paying whatever it costs but as it is rapidly rising by the day, I am worried I won’t be able to keep up. It makes me uncomfortable to ask for help but for Harley’s sake, I would be so grateful if anyone can help out in any way to help me get my Harley home ❤️
