On May 3, 2018, my brother, Sokea, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer in the bone marrows. It is extremely rare that this type of cancer is affecting someone at such a young age as he is only 38 years old.
It all began when Sokea felt pain in his ribs from a chronic cough he contracted back in January, only to realize the pain has been bothering him for a few years and had worsen. It was only when the pain became so extreme he was not able to pick up or carry his 2 year old daughter, Kayden, that prompted him to finally get it checked. He scheduled an appointment at the end of January and the doctor found the longevity of the pain to be abnormal and ordered a blood test. He was then referred to a hemotologist, a blood specialist, who then ordered CT Scan and more blood work. A bone marrow biopsy was then performed immediately to confirm the doctor's suspicions of myeloma.
Before releasing him, the doctor gave him a dose of steroid in hopes to relieve pain as well as reduce inflammation. Instead, it had an adverse effect and caused an opposite reaction and heightened the pain. Everything went downhill after that! He felt a spasm in his lower back that brought him to his knees and became completely immobile. He was inevitably admitted into ER and was hospitalized for almost two weeks. Within that time, doctors also found five compressed fractures in his lower spine. Due to Multiple Myeloma, his bones have become very fragile and fractures can become frequent. He is now wearing a full upper body brace to stabilize his spine.
To top off the challenges he is facing, he and his wife, Tina, are also expecting their second child. For such a time that typically calls for celebration, Sokea has no choice but to miss out on all the prenatal visits because he simply cannot walk. Tina has been shouldering the weight of caring for Sokea and Kayden 24/7, while trying to keep the baby growing inside her healthy.
We wanted to create this fund to help them financially. After his last fall, he hasn't been able to do any work. He has been so stressed. Beside cancer taking everything normal away, he is not able to work to provide for his family. All the while his medical bills are piling up. Please help Sokea and his family in any way you can. We hope that this fund will help pay some of their home and medical bills while he is seeking treatment for his cancer.
