Sara needs our help!

Hi, my name is Anne, and I’m organizing a most urgent fundraiser for my dear sister, Sara Miller. She has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor, called an Acoustic Neuroma, which causes symptoms such as hearing loss/deafness, vertigo and loss of balance, facial paralysis, and an acoustic neuroma may grow large enough to compress the brainstem and become life-threatening. At this point, Sara’s experiencing balance issues and hearing loss and requires brain surgery to ensure that the tumor doesn’t continue to grow and cause Sara’s health to further decline. I’m so grateful to know that a procedure is available to her, this is not her first brain tumor nor surgery, and we know the recovery period will be long and painstaking. She will need different therapies to assist in recovery and post-surgery, in-home nursing care for a short period that will be very costly. The surgery will need to be performed in Seattle which is five hrs away from her home and will require she stay in a hotel for two weeks post surgery which will be very expensive. She will need time to learn to walk steadily again because her vestibular nerve, which is responsible for balance, will be removed and it takes time for the opposite side of the brain to take over. The surgery itself will also likely cause hearing loss and possible deafness, vertigo, nausea, and other symptoms that will require therapy and treatment. It isn’t possible to know how long it will take Sara to fully recover, she is hoping to be able to get back to work in 6 months and is preparing herself mentally for the challenges she’ll face in achieving this ambitious goal. However, during her recovery period, she will have no ability to earn a living and it is for this reason that I am coming to you, for this desperately needed help.

For those of you who don’t know Sara, She is a single mother who is completely devoted to her sweet 14 year old daughter, Sophie. She’s a loving mother, daughter, sister, Aunt, and friend. She also happens to be the most kind and gentle person I’ve ever known and has still managed during this very challenging time to continue to make the people she loves a priority. Sara’s primary focus has been to make sure she can care for Sophie properly, allay her worries, and guide her through this trying time.

Complicating matters further, 2 years ago Sara and Sophie moved to Washington state in an effort to escape the remarkably high cost of living in Southern California. Unfortunately, this means that she is now over a thousand miles away from her family and friends and has no support system to rely on for even the most basic needs throughout the monumental task of recovering from brain surgery. While Sophie does all she can to help, at 14 years old, she has school and other scholastic responsibilities that keep her busy as she works to achieve her own goals. As a result of the pandemic, the once-affordable city she moved to has experienced massive rent increases. Sara’s own modest apartment has increased her rent by 80% in fewer than 18 months! This reality, coupled with the outrageously inflated cost of food, gas, and other essentials, has caused her income to be eaten up just to provide the basics for Sophie and herself. She has had no opportunity to prepare for an emergency such as the one she faces now.

Time is not on our side because the tumor is unpredictable and growing. Sara cannot have the surgery unless she can raise the necessary funds first so that she can secure a temporary nurse and gather the necessary supplies and provisions for the post-surgery period wherein she will be incapable of running even minor errands. The amount of stress and angst Sara is shouldering is hard to imagine and she desperately needs our help.

Any and all donations are welcome and deeply appreciated! Even $5 can be critical to helping Sara literally get back on her feet and back to work!

Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
