Hi, my name is Naomi. I'm a second-year student at MiraCosta College that's majoring in Liberal Arts with a concentration in the Humanities. On campus, I work as a student ambassador and am the president of Baking Club. In the past, I've worked closely with Umoja, and have encouraged Black high school students to apply to college. Recently, I've been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to spend 3 months studying abroad in Spain.
This trip takes place during the Spring 2026 semester. Ultimately, my goal is to be pushed out of my comfort zone. I got my passport earlier this year, but have never left the United States. I want to take advantage of this opportunity and expand my worldly view. Exploring new opportunities, cultures, and networking out of the country will only help me in the long run. Also, Spanish 201, which is part of my educational plan, will be available as a course in Spain. Going on this trip will not only improve my language skills through immersion, but also deepen my knowledge of linguistics. When I transfer, I want to major in speech pathology; however, there will be a gap in my education. I have taken all available linguistics courses at my college. Speech pathologists work with a wide variety of people, including second-language learners. Learning Spanish will be a valuable tool for bonding and helping future clients. In the United States, only around 11.5% of pathologists identified as multilingual providers (ASHA). There is a significant service gap for those whose first language is not English. Communication is a human right; non-native English speakers deserve to be serviced as well. This trip will bridge the gap between my passion and career by giving me the skills I need to aid others in the future.
Your donation would cover housing, meals, medical insurance, and a roundtrip ticket. I will also be applying to scholarships, but none of them will significantly cover the cost. Your donation can help make this possible. By donating, you’re not just funding a trip—you’re investing in my future. Thank you for contributing to my fund.
