It all began in September of 1973.  My father took me to the International House of Pancakes for breakfast before a blood test for diabetes at Christ Community Hospital.  Needless to say, the blood sugar levels were way too high.  This began a long stay at Christ to learn and understand my new path.  Honestly, I’m not too sure how much a nine-year-old grasps except he’s in a hospital and everyone is coming to visit and bringing gifts!

If it weren’t for my Irish immigrant parents, my aunts and uncles, and my siblings, my diabetic career would have been extremely different.  They taught me to live and learn through all my experiences, both good and bad. My family pushed me to do everything correctly to ensure I would live a normal life.

Going along with this, thank God for all my friends! From grammar school through college, they all contributed to my attempt to make my blood sugar goals and beat any side effects of the diabetes.  This is a tough battle to fight alone.  When I began working at the Ford Motor Company, things got interesting.  There were probably 75 people who helped me with low blood sugar and insulin reactions during my 25 years at this company.  Thank you all for that.

After 37 years of fighting diabetes, I was listed for a kidney/pancreas transplant.  This disease affects the body and organs in so many ways.  In 2009, I was blessed to receive three new organs from the Gift of Life Program!  During the first dual transplant, the pancreas rejected and after a few months of recovery, I was given another!  Pretty lucky guy, am I right?

Diabetes is the disease that keeps on giving, even after a transplant that allowed me to return to a somewhat normal and functioning body.  On March 8, 2017, I had my right leg removed four inches below the knee.  This was due to vascular issues with the three arteries feeding that leg.  I never smoked, drank, and I am not overweight, so this came as quite the shock.

After two transplants and an amputation, your personal finances can take a huge hit.   I understand all the effects it has on me, but my children and my family should not be penalized.

Please consider donating to help cover the medical expenses that I have been, and will continue, to face.
