5K Every Day in May

My '5K Every Day in May' fundraiser raised a grand total of $11,044.00  through a combination of generous donations to my GoFundMe page and to the SHP Winnipeg website!
This incredible act of kindness and generosity from the many donors involved will allow SHP Winnipeg to build and provide 31 beds to Winnipeg children.

Your support, encouragement and donations helped fuel every step of my 155KM through 31 different routes throughout Winnipeg and Manitoba. We hope to see everyone at our future bed building events and donation drives! Until then, stay safe! Thank you! ~ Maria

Hi! My name is Maria and I'm running 5K Every Day in May with the goal of raising $5K in support of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) – Winnipeg, a volunteer-driven charity.

Through community partnerships and donations, SHP Winnipeg, builds and donates twin-size beds to Winnipeg children who are currently sleeping on the floor.

This past year as their volunteer Director, Communications & Donor Relations, I was shocked to learn the prevalence of child bedlessness in my own city. Approximately 4,000 children in Winnipeg are currently sleeping on the floor – whether on air mattresses, on old mattresses, on couch cushions and even foam mats in some cases.

A new bed for a child is not just a piece of furniture, it gives a child a sense of self-worth – that they are worthy of having their own bed and a space of their own to relax. Plus, we know that a good night’s sleep is imperative to a child’s development.

A new bed also offers the family a sense of dignity – whether we’re giving beds to children of poverty or newcomers, or children being reunited with their parent(s), their new SHP bed is one less thing the family needs to worry about, bringing an overall sense of peace.

To help this cause that is near and dear to my heart, for the month of May, I am making it my mission to raise $5K – to help get 14 children from sleeping off the floor and into a new bed of their own!

Every day, I’ll be running a different route showcasing various parks and attractions in Winnipeg and Manitoba – like a tourist in my own city! I’ll be posting daily on SHP Winnipeg’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/shpwinnipeg) from my running route and providing weekly fundraising updates.

All proceeds will be donated to SHP Winnipeg by way of the charity’s Canadian head office in Sherwood Park, AB.
