Skeeter’s story:

Many of you know Skeeter, but you may not know her story.

Skeeter is our 8-year-old Border Collie who lived the first 8 years of her doggie life, along with her humans and doggie siblings, very happily on a farm. Her owner, who loved, and still loves her dearly, suffered many hardships and recently had to make the very difficult decision that she would no longer be able to care for her beloved Skeeter and her siblings. She was gladly taken in by the amazing Border Collie rescue group, Clancy’s Dream.

While this was going on, I had been researching Border Collie rescues, as we had fostered a Border Collie and fell in love. As luck would have it, Clancy’s Dream got word that Skeeter would be coming into the rescue, just about the same time I submitted our application to foster/adopt. We had specifically requested an older dog, and there she was. We were thrilled, and it was love at first picture view.

At the end of February, we drove 2 ½ hours to meet Skeeter, and there was no doubt she was going to be ours. We loaded her up in the car, and brought her home.

I can only imagine how confused and anxious Skeeter was. She went from a very loving home, to a foster, was vetted, met us, and was at a new home, all withing 2-3 weeks. And then there were the cats. You see, Skeeter had never been around a cat. We were a little apprehensive, as it’s not uncommon for Border Collies to chase or herd cats. Boy, were we surprised. Poor Skeeter was so scared of the cats, she went into instant panic mode. And when I say panic, I mean if she could have climbed through the wall to get away from them, she would have. The only way we could get her to calm, was to crate her.

We were really worried after the first week, as she hadn’t calmed down much at all around the cats. Luckily, with lots of love, patience and treats, she figured out that the cats weren’t going to hurt her and she didn’t have to be their friend, just their roommate.

Since then she’s been a gem. “But first, let me say” is what I hear most times Skeeter meets someone new. Everyone wants to tell me how sweet she is, and they are right! If you have any desire to be licked to death, she’s your girl. She loves everyone, even our little toddler grandchildren.

She’s been to doggie school since we brought her home which helped her to be calmer and more confident. In fact, Fred just said to me recently that she’s finally settled in. Then, the event ...

When we woke up Monday morning (Sept. 12), Skeeter could not walk, stand or even sit. Over the next two days she underwent several tests including an MRI, which revealed the cause ... a herniated disc in her neck.

She was off to surgery right away and is now on the way to a long recovery.

As you can imagine, we are now faced with a very substantial bill to cover the cost of this. We did get some help from Clancy's Dream, where we adopted Skeeter from, but we are still left with a substantial bill to pay off.

We are asking for any financial assistance that you might be able to provide to cover this expense as we had just spent most of our savings on a large home project and were not prepared for another major financial event right away.

No donation is too small, as every little bit helps. If you are not in a position to assist, would you please consider sharing this to help spread the word?

Our sincere thanks,
Kim and Fred
